課程概述

介紹語意學理論及其應用。上課資料、作業、討論屆時會在Ceiba公告。

課程目標
This course is an introduction to Semantics, the study of meaning. More specifically, the meaning of expressions in natural languages like Chinese. The purpose of this course is to expose graduate students in linguistics to some ground level concepts in the study of semantics, including formal foundations, current approaches and issues.

We will be addressing the question of how it is possible for human beings to understand sentences they have never heard before, and what might be the characteristics of the mental faculties that allow us to do this. We will attempt to give precise analyses of the meanings by using concepts from set theory, logic and syntactic theory, the basics of which will be taught in the first few weeks of class. Attention will also be paid to foundational issues taken from different perspectives, such as cognitive, corpus-based, computational approaches.
課程要求
The course unit comprises of two elements:
1. Lecture (basically based on the contents of weekly reading assignment).
2. Seminar (Student-led research presentations and discussions based on the contents of weekly reading assignment).

*All students must read the paper for each lecture/seminar in advance of the class. Each Thursday, you will receive the homework, which will be due the following Wednesday. The answers to the problem set will be discussed in the class. For this reason, no late assignments will be accepted.

*During the semester, one student will present ONE book chapter and ONE seminar paper to the class. We expect that each presentation to last 30 minutes with the entire session lasting around 60 minutes (in much the same way that a official seminar operates). In order not to unduly constrain discussion, presenters should be prepared to accommodate questions and some discussion during the presentation. Slides (ppt) need to be sent to me by Wednesday.

*A term paper is to be submitted at the end of semester. It should be succinct, summarizing the extant literature, and demonstrate a clear ability
to identify relevant issues and research questions. Further the paper must provide a clear indication of the scope for new research with a coherent argument as to why further examination of these problems and research questions is relevant and valuable.
